Quick Reference

Library Services, Materials and Policies

Reference Collection

The Reference and Information Collection provides patrons with information that enables them to make informed decisions affecting their community and their personal lives, work and other interests.  Library reference provides the public with a convenient and effective access point to the vast and complex field of information on which our society depends.  This collection enables people to lead more secure, enjoyable lives and helps them serve as contributing members of society.
  • Reference materials cannot be checked out
  • The collection helps answer quick questions, usually dealing with facts.  It acts as a basis for further research.

Videos/DVDs

The library keeps an updated collection of videos and DVD's that can be checked out by patrons.

  • Borrowers must have a Stevens Memorial Library card and be in good standing.
  • Three videocassettes and two DVD's per household may be borrowed for a 7-day period with one renewal.
  • IMPORTANT: The outside book drop should NOT be used to return videocassettes or DVD's.  Any damaged materials will incur full replacement costs.

Library Card Policies

A library card is an important document that entitles you to all the services provided by the library.

  • Please always have your library card with you.  You may not charge materials without it.
  • If your library card is lost, you can get a replacement card, just ask a librarian.
  • The cardholder is responsible for all materials charged to the card.  This includes fees that may be incurred due to returning materials late, damaged, or not at all.
  • A library card may be obtained from the circulation desk.  Anyone over the age of 6 is eligible, however minors need a signature from a parent or guardian.

Book Loan/Reserve/Renewal

  • Patrons possessing a library card may charge non-reference materials for a period of two weeks, excluding videos/dvds.  All materials charged will include a due date slip to remind you when to return the material.
  • Materials (excluding videos/dvds) may be renewed for an additional two weeks.  A renewal may be granted if the patron brings the item to the library, or renewals may be phoned in.  A renewal will not be granted if the material is on reserve by another patron.
  • Materials which are owned by the library but are already charged may be reserved at the circulation desk.
New titles may also be reserved.
  • Patrons with overdue materials will have library privileges suspended.
  • Lost or damaged materials may incur full replacement costs.

Other Collections

The Historical and Genealogical Collections contain historically important materials on Ashburnham and the surrounding area.  Additionally, a Large Print collection of both fiction and non-fiction books is available to assist patrons with sight difficulty.  Please ask a librarian if you have any questions regarding materials in any of the collections.

Volunteering

There are a number of volunteers who do various tasks for the library.  Stevens Memorial Library welcomes the services of volunteer workers on a regularly scheduled basis, regardless of whether the hours given are minimal in number.

You can also help support the library by joining the Stevens Memorial Library Friends organization.
